Beyond Digital Detox: Youth and Social Resilience
For today’s youth, digital connectivity is not a tool but an environment, one that continuously shapes cognitive patterns, emotional responses, and social belonging. Persistent notifications, algorithm-driven feeds, and performance-based social validation systems influence sleep quality, attention regulation, stress levels, and self-perception. As online engagement becomes constant, the boundary between our own choices and how apps push us to behave starts to disappear. What emerges is not merely a lifestyle concern but a public health puzzle: how does sustained digital immersion affect both individual mental well-being and the broader social fabric?
This session will examine digital overexposure through a health- centred lens, focusing on the relationship between individual well-being and societal resilience. It will explore how young people can cultivate digital resilience, the capacity to engage online without compromising psychological balance, emotional regulation, or authentic connection. Framed as a public health imperative rather than a private struggle, digital well-being will be discussed as a foundational pillar of societal resilience. The session will argue that a society’s strength depends on the clarity, empathy, and emotional stability of its citizens. Moving beyond alarmist narratives or simplistic “digital detox” solutions, the discussion will address how healthier norms, peer cultures, and intentional habits can strengthen both personal mental health and collective social cohesion in an always-on world.
Discussion Themes:
• How does constant digital connectivity affect young people’s mental health, attention regulation, sleep patterns, and emotional resilience?
• In what ways do platform algorithms and peer-driven digital norms shape individual well-being and social belonging among youth?
• What does digital resilience look like in practice, and how can young people build healthier boundaries without disengaging from digital life?
• How can strengthening individual digital habits contribute to broader societal resilience and healthier youth cultures?
